Action for Healthy Kids is a national nonprofit that brings together dedicated volunteers and partners to make schools healthier places where kids thrive.

Their website offers a physical education teacher with many ideas for building family engagement into their yearly plans, starting with getting buy-in from the school administration.

Here are 6 tips they provide for inviting families into a physical education class at the school:

  1. Students will be excited about having parents join class. Follow a class routine and a familiar lesson to keep students on task.
  2. Collaborate with classroom teachers to demonstrate to parents how students get daily physical activity outside of physical education class through classroom physical activity breaks.
  3. Consider scheduling a similar event after school or during conferences to make it possible for more parents to participate. For example, host a Family Fitness Night.
  4. Be aware that adults may have physical activity limitations. Provide the lesson plan with plenty of options for inclusion and modification.
  5. Issue a family challenge at the end of class to keep the physical activity momentum going. Share information about the Family Activity Points.
  6. Consider how your school can open your facility to the community for more regular physical activity.
