Walk-Through Toolkit for Schools: What does it mean to be a “Welcoming School”?

This toolkit covers four components of a welcoming school atmosphere. By assessing a school’s atmosphere in these critical areas, schools can develop plans to meet the needs of their school communities and improve their environments, thus creating a foundation for increasing family and community engagement.

  1. Physical Environment
  2. Practices and Policies
  3. Personal Interaction
  4. Written Materials and Communications

“Working with others that are also invested in the success of the school, buildings can receive input that can be used towards creating a more welcoming environment.”

This work was prepared by Kim Moritz from the Ohio Department of Education’s State Support Team Region 6 on September 6, 2018.
